Volvo Group — Cutting Detention Costs Roughly in Half with Dynamic Yard

Volvo Group replaced radio-coordinated trailer moves with on-screen visibility from FourKites Dynamic Yard®, cutting detention costs from about $54,000 to about $26,000 and setting up a move from Excel scheduling to FourKites Appointment Manager.

The Challenge

Before Dynamic Yard, Volvo Group's switchers coordinated trailer moves over the radio. Nobody had shared visibility into where a trailer sat or what the yard looked like at a given moment.

Detention was a significant and recurring expense. Appointment scheduling lived in Excel, tracked by hand with limited visibility across the team, so the team could not see carrier arrivals coming.

Our Solution

Volvo Group deployed FourKites Dynamic Yard® so switchers could see every trailer's location in real time. Dynamic Yard is now central to daily yard operations, showing the team where trailers are and which moves to make next.

The scheduling side is next. FourKites Appointment Manager goes live in December and will move appointment scheduling off Excel, giving the team advance notice of carrier arrivals so dock doors are ready when trucks pull in.

The Result

As of September 2026, detention costs have been cut roughly in half, from about $54,000 last year to about $26,000 currently, a direct result of the yard visibility Dynamic Yard provides.

For the switcher team, the change is also about safety and efficiency. They no longer coordinate moves over the radio and instead work from on-screen visibility into trailer location, which Volvo Group says is safer and more efficient. Appointment Manager is expected to extend that visibility to carrier arrivals when it goes live in December.
