Cold Chain Intelligence: Temperature Monitoring from Port to Dock

Cold Chain Intelligence: Temperature Monitoring from Port to Dock

The cold chain gap

Temperature-sensitive shipments (pharmaceuticals, fresh food, biologics, chemicals) require continuous monitoring from origin to destination. The regulatory requirements are strict: GDP compliance for pharma, FSMA for food, and customer-specific SLAs that mandate temperature documentation at every handoff. Despite this, most cold chain monitoring has gaps. IoT sensors log temperature data, but the data sits in the sensor vendor's platform, disconnected from the shipment lifecycle and the facility operations that handle the cargo.

Integrated temperature intelligence

FourKites integrates temperature data directly into the Shipment Twin. Every temperature reading from an IoT sensor is linked to the shipment record, the carrier, the mode, and the current leg of the journey. This integration means temperature is not a separate data stream. It is a dimension of the shipment model, alongside location, ETA, and status.

Excursion detection in transit

The system monitors temperature against configurable thresholds. When a reading exceeds the threshold (a temperature excursion), Tracy triggers an immediate response: alert the shipper, contact the carrier, and log the excursion with timestamp, location, duration, and severity. For pharmaceutical shipments, the excursion record becomes part of the chain-of-custody documentation required for GDP compliance.

Facility handoff intelligence

The critical moments in cold chain are handoffs: when cargo moves from a refrigerated container to a dock, from a dock to a cold storage area, from one carrier to another. FourKites connects the temperature monitoring to the facility timeline: what was the temperature at gate-in? How long was the cargo on the dock before it reached cold storage? Did the receiving facility confirm temperature compliance at acceptance? The Facility Twin and the Shipment Twin model these handoffs as a connected chain.

Why this matters

Cold chain intelligence is where IoT, Digital Twins, and AI agents intersect. The IoT sensors provide the raw data. The Shipment Twin provides the context (which shipment, which leg, which carrier). The Facility Twin provides the handoff intelligence. Tracy provides the autonomous response when something goes wrong. No single system delivers this. The integrated architecture is the product.
