As First Solar expanded across multiple domestic and international manufacturing sites, its logistics operations were weighed down by manual, reactive processes — staff responding to hundreds of pickup and delivery emails daily and managing appointment scheduling through error-prone spreadsheets. Loads approaching expiration, unassigned shipments, and delayed delivery confirmations created financial leakage and slowed the invoicing tied to those confirmations, all while the company managed complex ocean shipments across global ports through its Oracle Transportation Management system.
First Solar pioneered automated workflows through FourKites' Tracy AI agent, purpose-built for the demands of solar manufacturing. Tracy proactively contacts carriers when loads aren't picked up on time, generates daily reports of unassigned shipments, and automatically extends expiry dates for loads nearing expiration. Custom city-tag construction and callback logic enabled accurate tracking of complex ocean shipments across global ports. The team also re-engineered financial operations so delivery confirmations automatically trigger invoice generation, replacing manual processes that had led to unprocessed loads and delayed payments.
First Solar shifted from reactive to proactive operations, eliminating manual email-based tracking and the manual management of expired loads. Automated delivery confirmations accelerated the cash-flow cycle by triggering timely invoicing, while improved data accuracy in core US and India markets sharpened real-time insight into cost-per-watt — a critical industry metric. Financial planning became more precise with better visibility into freight costs versus forecast, and the platform scales with rising shipment volumes without proportional headcount increases.
By implementing a global visibility platform, we've reimagined how we manage our end-to-end supply chain, creating true visibility across our worldwide network.
